La Maddalena is an island: from Olbia airport you first travel to the port of Palau on Sardinia’s north coast, then take the ferry across. There are three ways to do the first leg.
1. Private transfer or taxi
The simplest option after a long-haul flight: a driver meets you at arrivals and takes you to Palau for the ferry, or across on the car ferry to your accommodation. Book ahead in summer.
2. Hire a car
Car hire desks are at Olbia airport. Drive to Palau and take the car ferry. Useful if you want to explore the rest of northern Sardinia; on the islands a scooter or small car is easier to park.
3. Bus and ferry
Public buses link the Olbia area with Palau. It is the cheapest option but needs more time and a check of the seasonal timetable.
